FREE Baby Yoda Crochet Pattern

Oh hey friends! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been on here, but I’m back!

The reason for my absence? Well, I grew a tiny human!

We found out we were pregnant a couple days after my last blog post and then I was inundated with extreme fatigue and morning sickness that lasted well into my second trimester.

My third trimester was filled with a diagnosis of gestational hypertension that required an induction and ten day hospital stay (basically the babe was giving me super high blood pressure for no reason). I was a hot pregnant mess, minus the “hot”.

But my pregnancy is a story for another time! Or maybe never, because does anyone actually want to hear scary pregnancy and birth stories?

ANYWAYS. Here’s a picture of my sweet baby.

Her name is Ava Kerrianne Bennett and I’ve never been so in love in my entire life. She was born a little over two months ago on October 5th (weighing 7lbs 1oz and 20 inches long, just in case you’re wondering because this seems to be a thing people want to know for some reason).

Even though it’s been quite the adjustment, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Every time I look at her, I get that weird rollercoaster ride feeling in my gut and my heart explodes a little.

During late night cluster feedings, my husband and I have been keeping busy by watching lots of movies and Netflix. And since we are slight Disney freaks, we obviously had to get Disney+ the day it came out. Scott is also a huge Star Wars fan so he was most excited to watch the new Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian. I wasn’t super keen on watching it at first, but I thought I’d give it a try since he was watching it anyways.

YOU GUYS. As soon as Baby Yoda showed up, I was HOOKED. Baby Yoda almost gives me the same rollercoaster ride heart-exploding feeling that my own child gives me. Almost. He is just SO DARN CUTE.

JUST LOOK AT HIM.

Eeeeeekkkk.

Okay, well as soon as I saw him, I was hoping a free crochet amigurumi pattern would come out ASAP so that I could make a little Baby Yoda for my little Baby Ava (okay, and maybe for me too).

Unfortunately, I only found fully finished crocheted Baby Yodas and paid patterns that I wasn’t loving enough to dish out my money for. So I got to work and decided to figure out a pattern and create my very own Baby Yoda.

This is the first amigurumi pattern that I’ve ever made, and I’m so excited to share it with y’all!

Since everyone is obsessed with this little guy, why not make a few for your friends and family for Christmas? Not only would this be a super cute gift, but it’s also inexpensive and easy enough for an advanced beginner crocheter to do!

The pattern is totally free right here, however if you’d like to support me by purchasing a PDF version of the pattern with a lot more step-by-step instructions and pictures of the process, you can buy it from my Etsy store!

What You’ll Need:
  • Worsted weight medium yarn in green and light brown (for the green I used Bernat Super Value in Forest Green, and for the brown I used Red Heart Super Saver in Café Latte, but you can use any green and brown worsted weight yarn!)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker ( a safety pin works too!)
  • 16 mm safety eyes (x2)
  • Fiber fill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Notes:
  • Unless otherwise specified, all parts will be worked in continuous rounds.
  • I always start all my rounds with a magic ring. Make sure to always be working with the outside of the shape facing you while you crochet around. This side is the “right” side. Click here to learn how to do a magic ring.
  • For convenience and so you don’t lose your place, mark the first crochet of each round with a stitch marker or safety pin. Check the number of loops after each crocheted round, indicated in the square brackets.
  • My finished toy measures 9.5 cm (3.75 inches) in height.
Abbreviations:

sc: single crochet,

hdc: half double crochet,

Head:

Using green yarn:

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring  *6*

Round 2: (inc) x6  *12*

Round 3: (sc, inc) x6  *18*

Using a piece of green yarn, sew the nose across two stitches between rows 8 and 9 – I sewed through the same two stitches 3 times, but feel free to do less if you want the nose smaller or more if you’d like it bigger. Tie a knot to secure the nose on the inside of the head.

Insert safety eyes between rows 7 and 8, with the nose below centred between them. For reference, there are 5 stitches in between my safety eyes.

Round 11: (2 sc, dec) repeat 6 times  *18*

Round 12: (sc, dec) repeat 6 times  *12*

Stuff with fiber fill to your desired firmness.

Round 13: (dec) repeat 6 times  *6*

Fasten off leaving a small tail. Weave the yarn tail in the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, then pull to close the hole. Hide the end.

Round 4: (inc, sc) x9  *27*

Round 5: sc in blo in all 27 stitches  *27*

Round 8: (sc in next 7 st, dec) x3  *24*

Round 9-10: sc in all 24 st  *24*

Round 11: (sc in next 6 st, dec) x3  *21*

Round 12: (sc in next 5 st, dec) x3  *18*

Round 13: sc in all 18 st  *18*

Round 14: (2 sc in flo, inc in flo) x6  *24* (The flo stitches will allow you to easily flip the collar down)

Round 15: (sc in 11 st, inc) x2  *26*

Round 16: (sc in 12 st, inc) x2  *28*

Round 17: (sc in 13 st, inc) x2  *30*

Chain 7 and fasten off leaving a long tail. Flip the collar down and sew the end of the chain to the top of the collar.

Do not cut the tail as you will use it to sew the head on the body.

Assembly

I used a simple whipstitch to sew all my pieces together.

First, sew the arms onto the body by lifting the collar up and sewing right in the crook where the collar begins. Secure and hide the ends. Fold the collar down.

Next, stuff the body. Using the brown tail from the body, attach the head to the body. Once again, hide the end after you’ve attached the pieces.

Finally, sew the ears on either side of the head with the straight part of the ears facing up. I also sewed the top of the ears on a little curve toward the eyes (see the red dots on the picture below to see what I mean). Hide the ends.

And viola! You’ve got yourself your own adorable little Baby Yoda!
